For the fourth time, the ESET Foundation has announced the winners of the ESET Science Award, awards for scientists and educators for their scientific work and their contribution to other areas of life. The awards in the categories of Outstanding Science Personality in Slovakia, Outstanding Science Personality under 35 and Outstanding Higher Education Personality were presented on the 15th October 2022 at the gala evening in Bratislava.

An international commission was also in attendance to decide the winners of the two main categories – Exceptional Personality of Science in Slovakia and Exceptional Personality of Science under 35 years of age. This year the committee was chaired by the Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Ada Yonath. Other members of the committee were German materials scientist Anke Weidenkaff, Ukrainian materials chemist working in the USA Yury Gogotsi, Dutch oncologist and researcher Rob Pieters and German particle physicist Manfred Lindner. The event was also attended by a special guest, Garik Israelian, founder of the STARMUS World Festival and well-known astrophysicist. The laureates of all three categories are selected on the basis of demanding criteria, including recent scientific research results and publications, measurable scientometric data, as well as communication and popularization of scientific knowledge, collaboration with other scientific disciplines, feedback from close collaborators or students, and many others.

This year, two personalities from the Faculty of Science were among the nominees. Prof. RNDr. Renáta Oriňáková, DrSc. in the category of Exceptional Personality of Higher Education and Assoc. RNDr. Miroslav Almáši, PhD. in the category of Exceptional Personality of Science under 35 years of age.
