Myths and legends about us
Is it true that computer science at UPJŠ is difficult?
Studying computer science at UPJŠ requires determination and a responsible attitude of the student. You certainly have these qualities, so you don’t have to worry. If you hesitate, we will in any case help you discover and strengthen your will to study and improve. It also applies to other trades. You will find out details about the course of study during Open door day, where you can meet our students of different grades.
Is it true that I need to know how to program before starting a university degree in computer science?
It is not necessary. During the first three semesters, you will acquire skills in object-oriented programming from basics to highly advanced techniques, e.g. in Java, Python, R.
Is it true that studying computer science at UPJŠ focuses on theory?
It is not truth. Thanks to cooperation with IT companies, we also prepare our students in accordance with the requirements of practice. Understanding the principles of computer science is naturally part of its study. Thanks to this, our graduates are also prepared for technologies that do not yet exist today. This is one of the key requirements for employees of the near future and an advantage over standard programmers. If you want to be prepared for current practice as quickly as possible, we offer a bachelor’s degree in Applied Informatics, which is even more focused on the practical use of informatics.
Is it true that I can only study computer science teaching at UPJŠ?
It is not truth. We offer the following study programs:
- Informatics – bachelor’s and master’s degree, doctoral degree
- Applied Informatics – bachelor’s degree
- Interdisciplinary study of informatics and another selected subject – bachelor’s degree
- Data analysis and artificial intelligence – bachelor’s and master’s degree
- Teaching the selected subject in combination with computer science – master’s degree
What if I choose computer science and want to teach it in elementary or high school? Not a problem. Either you choose a combination of informatics with another field at the bachelor’s degree Faculty of Science or Faculty of Arts of the UPJŠ in Košice and at the master’s degree you continue the study program of teaching. If you are already a teacher, we offer an extension study of informatics (5 semesters).
Is it true that I can get a job in an IT company after high school?
There are successful computer scientists who never started or never finished college. However, most IT professionals agree that a quality university is a great place to start a career: it provides perspective, opportunities and contacts. An example is also our graduates who hold leading positions in IT companies. Here are some examples:
- Facebook, California, USA (Software Engineer)
- T-Systems, Košice (Tech Leader and ICT Architect)
- Amazon.com, UK (Software Development Engineer)
- Google Inc., California, USA (Senior Staff Software Engineer)
