Department of cell biology is a part of the Institute of biology and ecology, Faculty of sciences, University of P. J. Šafárik in Kosice, which was created in 2002 on the basis of pre-existing biological departments. Current department transformed from the former Department of cell and molecular biology, and continues with providing teaching core subjects of biology at undergraduate and graduate level, interdisciplinary studies, bachelor and master teacher training as well as other specialized subjects. Research has gradually focused on more directions. In addition to experimental studies of carcinogenesis and cancer prevention and treatment our research was extended to monitoring and explanation of the processes of spinal cord development focusing on glia and ependymal tissue. New is a program of fetal medicine, where research is focus on explaining molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of malformations and developmental disorders of mammalian embryos and fetuses.
