Ray Cooney is a popular English writer of comedies that are still performed everywhere in the world. Also in Slovakia. He started as an actor, later as a successful playwright he founded the Theatre of Comedy Company, which he ran as a director. He wrote the comedy Tom, Dick and Harry together with his son Michael Cooney.

“Cooney’s comedy Tom, Dick and Harry doesn’t pretend to be deep, but it’s not superficial. There are interesting characters and very convoluted situations that the main character gets into and has to deal with. The rehearsals are a pleasant encounter with pleasant people over a pleasant text,” said director Michal Spišák and continued: “Sometimes this type of comedy is taken with a bit of disrespect. However, they are very necessary for the theatre, because they draw the audience in. And the actors enjoy playing them because the audience response is very spontaneous.”

“This kind of dramatic literature, which has a tradition in the history of theatre, is something like clockwork. Also, a watch can have different shapes, but it has to have a certain number of wheels, springs and hands to tell the time. By analogy, this type of play can have different visual forms in terms of sets, costumes or sound effects, but it has to follow certain rules so that the clockwork doesn’t stop, tread and show, say, dramatic time. It is important to keep the degree of drift so that artistic ambition does not overtake craft,” added Michal Spišák.
