Stanislav Basarik, a PhD student at the Institute of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science, Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, achieved an exceptional success at the recent international conference IPMU 2024, which took place from 22 to 26 July, 2024 in Lisbon. He won the prize for the best paper.
Together with his colleague Lenka Halčinová, PhD he presented a paper entitled: Basarik, S., Halčinová L.: Extended permutations dependent Choquet-like operator and application, which was awarded the Best Student Paper Award.
In the paper, the authors discussed the development of a new mathematical method, which they successfully applied in the field of image processing, namely in the so-called image inpainting. This technique allows the removal of unwanted objects from digital images or the repair of their damaged parts. In practical life, image inpainting helps, for example, in retouching photographs, removing unwanted objects or people from photographs, removing scratches and other damages from old images. It is a sought-after feature for photo editing in advertising and marketing.

We are extremely pleased with the award and proud of our colleagues for succeeding in a strong international competition. Their success is a testament to the quality education and research at our faculty.
