Lajos Thaisz – The founder of scientific botany in Ko\u0161ice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

L. Thaisz was born in 1867 in Nagyb\u00e1nhegyes in former Csan\u00e1d district (today B\u00e9k\u00e9s district situated in southeastern part of Hungary). He attended primary and secondary schools in B\u00e9k\u00e9scsaba and Szarvas and he graduated from the University in Budapest.<\/p>\n

In 1888 he was taken into the service at The Institute for Seed Control in Budapest as a probationer, assistant and adjunct in cooperation with Prof. K. Czak\u00f3. In 1907, he became the head of the Ko\u0161ice branch of the above Institute, which he reorganized. He founded a library, collection of seeds and plants there. In 1910, he was called to Agricultural Ministry in Budapest as a head of the group for meadow and grasslands management. In 1922 he retired at the rank of Ministery Adviser and in 1927 he was appointed the General Director for Research.<\/p>\n

He died 23. 9. 1937 in Budapest and was buried at Pestszentlorinc (today a part of Budapest).<\/p>\n

He was even-minded, quiet and modest man with immensely positive relation to Hungarian ground. He was a lord from top to toe even without country estate.<\/p>\n

His scientific and professional activities can be divided into two groups: the field of floristic research, phytogeography and plant systematics and the field of agricultural botany.<\/p>\n

At first I’d like to discuss the latter. At the Institute for Seed Control in Budapest, he concentrated his interests on seed growing and meadow and grassland management. In his numerous special and popular papers he dealt with rise and regeneration of grasslands and with various types of them, with meadows and pastures improvement, with grassing of waste places, banks, sands, with maintenance of garden grasslands. He supported cultures of clover-grass mixtures in which he allways pushed the application of native species. He proposed six mixtures with other combinations. He recommended these mixtures from the point of view of crop alternation, soil enrichment by nitrogen , and animal feeding. He was also interested in seed quality testing, seed falsification preventing, clearing of clover seeds from dodder seeds. He introduced a number of innovations in testing and sealing methods. Most of his lectures in State Hungarian Agricultural Association were published.<\/p>\n

His papers on agricultural botany were published especially in K\u00f6ztelek (Common Land; more than 50 papers). The most important publications in book form are works dealing with meadow and pasture improvement in Sz\u00e9kelyf\u00f6ld region (1910), with grassing down of Hungarian soils (1927) and the plan of meadow and grassland management in Danubian region in Pest district (1930).<\/p>\n

The second field which Thaisz paid considerable attention to was floristics, phytogeography, plant systematics, ecology and seed and fruit anatomy.<\/p>\n

He studied the flora of former Hungary from 1885. He botanized not only in Hungary, but also on the territory of today’s Slovakia, western part of Ukraine, Austria, Dalmatia, Romania (Transsylvania) and Switzerland. He thoroughly knew especially the vegetation of former Hungarian districts Abauj – Torna, Csan\u00e1d, Csongr\u00e1d and Bereg. He contributed significantly to the knowledge of Hungarian flora. He was the main contributor of Dr. \u00c1. Degen in editing of exsiccates of Hungarian grasses, and exsiccate collection of genera of Juncaceae, Cyperaceae, Typhaceae and Sparganiaceae families prepared in Institute for Seed Control under Degen’s supervision. He gave his large herbarium collection of 9.000 sheets to Hungarian National Museum (Budapest) in 1932. His herbarium specimens can be found also in Slovakia (Slovak National Museum in Bratislava, Agricultural University in Nitra, Botanical Garden of P.J. \u0160af\u00e1rik University in Ko\u0161ice).<\/p>\n

He published regularly his botanical papers in N\u00f6v\u00e9nytani (Botanikai) K\u00f6zlem\u00e9nyek (Botanical News), Magyar Botanikai Lapok (Hungarian Botanical Papers), Term\u00e9szettudom\u00e1nyi K\u00f6zl\u00f6ny (Bulletin of Natural Sciences) and P\u00f3tf\u00fczetek a Term\u00e9szettudom\u00e1nyi K\u00f6zl\u00f6nyh\u00f6z (Supplements to Bulletin of Natural Sciences).<\/p>\n

From the number of his botanical papers I’d like to mention papers concerned with seeds of Gleditsia, anatomical study of seeds, floristics of Csan\u00e1d, Abauj-Torna, Csongr\u00e1d and Bereg districts, floristics of Hungary, Festuca dalmatica (Hack.)Richt., Agropyrum intermedium (Host)P.B. subsp. banaticum (Heuff.)J\u00e1v. (= A. banaticum {Heuff.}Thaisz), Sesleriacoerulans Friv. subsp. bielzii (Schur) Gergely et Beldie, Chamaesycehumifusa (Willd.)Prokh., Ch. vulgaris Prokh., Festucawagneri Degen, Thaisz et Flatt emend. So\u00f3, systematics and phytogeography of Poaceae, Syringa josikaea Jacq. ex Rchb. Some reviews published in Magyar Botanikai Lapok and Botanikai K\u00f6zlem\u00e9nyek are important as well. In 1902-1907, he regularly contributed by reports on sessions of Botanical Section of Natural Sciences Society in Magyar Botanikai Lapok.<\/p>\n

When Thaisz came to Ko\u0161ice in 1907, he decided to study Abauj-Torna district flora. Except of fragmentary floristic data (e.g. MARCZ\u00c9NYI 1847, KOV\u00c1CS 1847, PAWLOWSKI 1856, HAZSLINSZKY 1857, GEYER 1869, FEKETE 1887, etc.) flora of this district was not studied. In his three contributions on Abauj-Torna district flora, Thaisz explored a number of localities and discovered lots of new species for the district, he corrected many records and confirmed rare findings. I’d like to mention some of his interesting findings: Waldsteiniaternata (Steph.) Fritsch, Huperzia selago (L.) Mart. in Schrank et Martius, Lycopodioides helvetica (L.) O.Kuntze, Polystichumbraunii (Spenner)F\u00e9e, Matteuccia struthiopteris (L.) Todaro, Scopolia carniolica Jacq. from Ko\u0161ick\u00e9 H\u00e1mre village (the village was situated at the place that is inundated by Ru\u017e\u00edn dam today, Middle Horn\u00e1d valley); Hottonia palustris L. from Mokrance village (Ko\u0161ice basin); Botrychium lunaria (L.) O.Swartz in Schrad. from Jelen\u00ed vrch near Ha\u010dava village (this and the following localities belong to Slovak Karst); Cypripedium calceolus L., Tephroseris integrifolia (L.) Holub from Miglinc valley near Jasov townlet; Crepis jacquinii Tausch, Isatis praecox Kit. ex Tratt., Cynoglossum haenkei Schult., Cleistogenes serotina (L.) Keng, Salix silesiaca Willd., Thymus carpaticus\u010celak. emend. Pawlowski, Trisetum alpestre (Host) Beauv. from Z\u00e1diel valley; Campanula carpatica Jacq., Chamaecytisustriflorus (Lam.) Skalick\u00e1, Nepeta pannonica L., Taxusbaccata L. from H\u00e1j valley ; Rhodax canus (L.) Fuss, Asyneumacanescens (Waldst. et Kit.) Griseb. et Schenk, Dorycniumherbaceum Vill., Quercus pubescens Willd. subsp. lanuginosa (Lam.) O. Schwarz from Turniansky hradn\u00fd vrch hill; Minuartia fastigiata (Smith)Reichenb., Gasparrinia peucedanoides (Bieb.) Thell., Teucriumbotrys L., Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz from Doln\u00fd vrch.<\/p>\n

Lajos Thaisz was not only an excelent florist, but also a phytogeographer and ecologist. He was also interested in genesis of flora of regions studied. He wasn’t satisfied with mere species account. He was attracted by causes of local flora differences and he wanted to know, why certain species grow in certain conditions and not in the others. That’s why, along with the study of Z\u00e1diel and H\u00e1j valleys (which fascinated him as well as other botanists), he decided to study also the plateau between them. „Flora occurring on the plateau above the valley is in general the same as the flora on lower calcareous mountains of Upper Hungary. Only from time to time a taxon from high mountains (e.g. Senecio aurantiacus) can be found here, but high mountain species, in which both valleys are very rich, are absent here. The explanation of this phenomenon can be found not only in different genesis of these localities, but particularly in the fact that the climate of plateau is less severe than that of valleys. In these narrow valleys, surrounded by high rocky walls, the snow thaws very late in spring and later on, very cold brooks flowing down the valley continually retain relatively low temperature of valleys. Also the fact that high rocky walls limit the entrance of sun rays contributes considerably to cold climate of the valleys. In some places the plants receive the direct sunshine only 1\/2 or 1\/4 of day and in other places none. The result of these conditions resembling alpine climate is alpine vegetation. As on the highland above the valleys high mountain flora is absent, or occurs very sporadically, thus in H\u00e1j and especially Z\u00e1diel valleys vegetation inversion has developed. I must point out this phenomenon as the most interesting result of my studies of this place.“ (Bot. K\u00f6zl. 9 : 224, 1910).<\/p>\n

L. Thaisz does not concentrate only on rare species, but he considers it important to publish more common species, too: „I consider it useful to emphasize these plants because in our district, where more floristic regions are meeting, they present real phytogeographical border stones.“ (op. c. : 226).<\/p>\n

Thaisz’s intention to continue in studies of Abauj-Torna district flora with the aim to propose a floristic division of the district flora couldn’t be finished because he was called to Agricultural Ministry to Budapest in 1910.<\/p>\n

L. Thaisz was hard-working collector who prepared and preserved his specimens very thoroughly. He often gave his herbarium material for revision to specialists and botanical friends. On the basis of his collections of rowans from Slovak Karst (Jelen\u00ed vrch, near Ha\u010dava village) R. So\u00f3 described Sorbus aria subsp. cretica f. thaiszii in 1937. Z. K\u00e1rp\u00e1ti transfered it to species value as S. thaiszii (So\u00f3) K\u00e1rp. in 1944. He evaluates it as a transition form between S. danubialis (J\u00e1v.) K\u00e1rp. and S. aria (L.) Crantz f. cyclophylla (Beck) J\u00e1v. It is probably a relict of flora migration when introgressive hybridization between these species occurred. The species is distributed in Aggtelek Karst, B\u00fckk Mts., M\u00e1tra Mts., Pilis Mts., Bakony Mts. (all in Hungary); Slovak Karst, Low Tatra Mts. (Mt. Magura), Middle Horn\u00e1d valley (Hradov\u00e1 hill, Trebejov village) (all in Slovakia); Lower Austria (Hainburg hills) (K\u00c1RP\u00c1TI 1960) and Slovak Paradise (KOVANDA 1986). Taxonomic evaluation of this taxon still waits for its detailed embryological, karyological and chemotaxonomic elaboration, which together with biometrical evaluation, more detailed data on distribution and homogenity of populations can contribute to clearing of its taxonomic value.<\/p>\n

After Thaisz Mentha excedentiformis Trautmann subsp. Thaiszii Trautmann in Kiss 1939 is named, too. It is a nomen nudum and the taxon belongs to M. longifolia L. group (So\u00f3 1968: 133). According to \u0160t\u011bp\u00e1nek ( ex HOLUB 1988) the concept of microspecies in Mentha genus is not suitable, as these are vegetatively reproducing clones of single nothomorfs without larger taxonomic importance (cf. HOLUB 1988: 77).<\/p>\n

Thaisz, as a good graminologist described, together with Degen and Flatt, a species of fescue – Festuca wagneri. This species is supposed to be a probable result of introgressive hybridization between F. majovskyi Holub (F. javorkae M\u00e1jovsk\u00fd var. javorkae, n. illeg.) and F. rupicola Heuff. (M\u00c1JOVSK\u00dd 1963: 327), or F. vaginata Waldst. et Kit. ex Willd. and F. rupicola Heuff. (SO\u00d3 1973: 287). This Pannonian endemic occurs probably only in southwestern Romania (Timisoara and Mehedinti district, BELDIE 1979: 357) and in northwestern Serbia (Deliblatskape\u0161\u010dara, GAJIC 1976: 429).<\/p>\n

M\u00e1jovsk\u00fd described a new species of fescue (Festuca javorkae) from southern Slovakia in 1963. He considers it as a product of introgressive hybridization of F. vaginata Waldst. et Kit. ex Willd. and F. rupicola Heuff. (M\u00c1JOVSK\u00dd 1963: 327). The above mentioned F. wagneri is included in his newly described species as var. wagneri. That’s why it is the case of nomen illegitimum and Holub names the M\u00e1jovsk\u00fd type variety of his species F. majovskii Holub (F. javorkae s. s., excl. var. wagneri). This species occurs in southern Slovakia (\u010cenkov, M\u00c1JOVSK\u00dd 1963) and records of F. wagneri agg. from Hungary and Lower Austria probably belong to this species, too (SO\u00d3 1973: 288, SO\u00d3 1980: 504).<\/p>\n

Only further biometrical investigations from the whole Pannonian region can make taxonomic and evolutionary questions of F. wagneri agg. clear. Nowadays, it is fully justifiable to divide them into two above mentioned species.<\/p>\n

In conclusion it can be said that L. Thaisz contributed fundamentally to the widening of botanical knowledge in many fields of science. He was an excellent botanist and a splendid man. In this way the name of our new first international, exclusively botanical journal in Slovakia will permanently remind of his botanical work, which laid the foundations of the flora knowledge of our region.<\/p>\n

Do r. 1907 pracoval v \u00dastave pre kontrolu os\u00edv v Budape\u0161ti a v rokoch 1907-1910 bol ved\u00facim jej pobo\u010dky v Ko\u0161iciach, ktor\u00fa zreorganizoval. R. 1910 ho povolali na Ministerstvo po\u013enohospod\u00e1rstva do Budape\u0161ti, kde p\u00f4sobil ako ved\u00faci oddelena l\u00fak a pasienkov a\u017e do roku 1922, ke\u010f odi\u0161el do d\u00f4chodku ako ministersk\u00fd poradca v danej oblasti. Ide pravdepodobne o produkt introgres\u00edvnej hybridiz\u00e1cie medzi S. danubialis (J\u00e1v.) K\u00e1rp. a S. aria (L.) Crantz f. cyclophylla (Beck) J\u00e1v. Roz\u0161\u00edren\u00fd je v pohoriach severn\u00e9ho Ma\u010farska, pri\u013eahlom Rak\u00fasku a v\u00e1pencov\u00fdch a dolomitick\u00fdch hornatin\u00e1ch Slovenska.<\/p>\n

Mentha excedentiformis Trautmann subsp. Thaiszii Trautmann je pravdepodobne notomorfou z okruhu M. longifolia a ide o nomen nudum.<\/p>\n

L. Thaisz spolu s Degenom a Flattom op\u00edsal nov\u00fd druh kostravy Festuca wagneri Degen, Thaisz et Flatt emend. So\u00f3. Ide pravdepodobne o produkt introgres\u00edvnej hybridiz\u00e1cie medzi F. majovskyi Holub a F. rupicola Heuff. Druh je svoj\u00edm v\u00fdskytom obmedzen\u00fd len na rumunsk\u00fa a srbsk\u00fa \u010das\u0165 Pan\u00f3nskej n\u00ed\u017einy. Druh F. majovskyi Holub bol r. 1963 op\u00edsan\u00fd M\u00e1jovsk\u00fdm ako F. javorkae M\u00e1jovsk\u00fd. Preto\u017ee bola do neho zaraden\u00e1 F. wagneri (ako var. wagneri), ide o nomen illeg. Tento druh je pravdepodobn\u00fdm produktom introgres\u00edvnej hybridiz\u00e1cie medzi F. vaginata Waldst. et Kit. ex Willd. a F. rupicola Heuff. Okrem v\u00fdskytu na ju\u017enom Slovensku patr\u00ed k tomuto druhu zrejme i materi\u00e1l zbieran\u00fd z Ma\u010farska a Rak\u00faska.<\/p>\n

L. Thaisz prispel podstatne k roz\u0161\u00edreniu botanick\u00fdch znalost\u00ed v mnoh\u00fdch odboroch. N\u00e1\u0161 nov\u00fd vedeck\u00fd \u010dasopis je prv\u00fdm medzin\u00e1rodn\u00fdm, v\u00fdlu\u010dne botanick\u00fdm \u010dasopisom na Slovensku. Jeho meno bude pripom\u00edna\u0165 Thaiszovu fundament\u00e1lnu pr\u00e1cu pri poznan\u00ed fl\u00f3ry n\u00e1\u0161ho \u00fazemia.<\/p>\n

Thaisz Lajos 1867-ben sz\u00fcletett Nagyb\u00e1nhegyesen az egykori Csan\u00e1d (most B\u00e9k\u00e9s) megy\u00e9ben. 1907-ig a Magyar Kir\u00e1lyi \u00c1llami Vetomagvizsg\u00e1l\u00f3 \u00c1llom\u00e1son dolgozott, majd 1907 \u00e9s 1910 k\u00f6z\u00f6tt \u00e1tvette az int\u00e9zet kassai kirendelts\u00e9g\u00e9nek vezet\u00e9s\u00e9t. Innen h\u00edvt\u00e1k be 1910-ben a F\u00f6ldmuvel\u00e9s\u00fcgyi Miniszt\u00e9rium k\u00f6zpontj\u00e1ba, ahol mint gazdas\u00e1gi botanikus vett r\u00e9szt a r\u00e9t- \u00e9s legelojav\u00edt\u00e1si mozgalmakban. Mint miniszteri tan\u00e1csos vonult nyugalomba 1922-ben. 1927-ben elol\u00e9ptett\u00e9k k\u00eds\u00e9rlet\u00fcgyi foigazgat\u00f3nak. Thaisz Lajos 1937-ben hunyt el Budapesten. S\u00edrj\u00e1t Pestlorincen tal\u00e1ljuk.<\/p>\n

Sz\u00e1mos n\u00f6v\u00e9ny \u00faj lelohely\u00e9t fedezte fel. P\u00e9ld\u00e1ul szolg\u00e1lhat a Waldsteiniaternata (Steph.) Thaisz L. nagyon figyelmes gyujto volt. A Falucska (Ha\u010dava) feletti Szarvas hegyen (G\u00f6m\u00f6r-Tornai karszt) v\u00e9gzett gy\u00fcjt\u00e9sei alapj\u00e1n 1937-ben So\u00f3 le\u00edrt egy \u00faj taxont a Sorbus aria (L.) Crantz subsp. cretica f. Thaiszii. 1944-ben K\u00e1rp\u00e1ti Z. \u00e1tsorolta mint S. thaiszii (So\u00f3) K\u00e1rp\u00e1ti. Felt\u00e9telezhetoen a S. danubialis (J\u00e1v.) K\u00e1rp. \u00e9s a S. aria (L.) Crantz f. cyclophylla (Beck) J\u00e1v. k\u00f6z\u00f6tti introgressz\u00edv hibridiz\u00e1ci\u00f3 eredm\u00e9ny\u00e9r\u00f6l van sz\u00f3. Ez a taxon Magyarorsz\u00e1g \u00e9szaki, Ausztria vele hat\u00e1ros r\u00e9szein, valamint Szlov\u00e1kia m\u00e9szko \u00e9s dolomit hegys\u00e9geiben van elterjedve.<\/p>\n

Ut\u00f3bbihoz volt sorolva a F. wagneri (mint var. wagneri), ez\u00e9rt az nomen illegitimum.
