Košice is a town with a rich history. It is first mentioned in the 13th century. The historic centre is the largest protected heritage area with the largest church in the country – the St. Elizabeth Cathedral. There was a great building boom in the communist era, when several concrete housing estates grew around the centre. Today Košice is the second largest town in Slovakia and thanks to its prestigious titles it is known also in the world: In 2013 the European Capital of Culture, in 2016 the European City of Sport and in 2019 the European Volunteering Capital. The city enjoys a rich cultural, social and sporting life all the year. Major events such as the Art Film Fest and the oldest marathon in Europe – the International Peace Marathon are very popular. P. J. Šafárik University in Košice

An important educational institution with more than 65 years history. It offers complex university education in the field of medicine, natural history, humane, juridical and behavioural sciences in all three degrees: bachelor, master and doctoral. The University is formed by five faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration and Faculty of Arts) and several departments. The University offers 96 study programmes in bachelor degree, 64 in master degree and several certified interdisciplinary blocks. It builds important scientific parks and research centres and there are several excellent scientific teams in its land.

Botanical Garden of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice

The conference is held at the occasion of 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden is a research and educational department of the University. Its area is about 30 ha and it is the largest botanical garden in Slovakia. In the greenhouses with the area 3200m2 there are the expositions of tropical and subtropical flora. In the outer part there are expositions of decorative, utility and water plants and also the exposition of wild domestic flora at the area about 4 ha. The rest of the area of the Botanical Garden belongs to arboretum with both indigenous and exotic woody plants of mild climatic zones. Botanical Garden prepares several thematic exhibitions each year. About 40 000 of visitors comes to the Botanical Garden per year.

The East Slovak Gallery

The East Slovak Gallery, established in 1951 as the first Slovak regional gallery, is housed in the historic County House building from the 18th century at Hlavná 27. It manages an extensive collection of over 7,000 artworks from the 15th century to the present, with emphasis on 19th and 20th century art.

The gallery’s mission is to systematically collect, protect, professionally evaluate and publicly present fine art of both domestic and foreign origin, with special focus on the Eastern Slovak region. Its collecting, research and exhibition activities cover a wide range of artistic genres and map the developmental periods of art in the region.

The current gallery team, composed of a new generation of curators, gallery educators and professional staff, continues the tradition while bringing innovative approaches. The gallery offers diverse exhibition projects including both old and contemporary art, organizes rich programming for professional and general audiences of all age categories.
