The history of the workplace begins on January 1, 1971, when a surgical department with a capacity of 60 beds was established on the premises of the current hospital in Košice-Šaci. In September 2006, the department was transformed into the Department of Surgery of the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava.

The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery was opened within the Department in July 2008. In the years 2011-2012, the outpatient and inpatient part of the department underwent a complete building reconstruction.

In September 2012, the department became part of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine in Košice and at the same time a teaching base for undergraduate medical students. In October 2012, the Mammar Center started its activities as a specialized professional workplace providing comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic activities for breast diseases in accordance with the latest scientific knowledge.

The department currently has 18 surgeons and 3 urologists. Nine members of the team have a PhD degree.

The department includes the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, the Mammary Center and the Urocentrum. The Department has 50 beds, of which 5 beds are in the intensive care unit.
