The Department of the Faculty of Medicine belongs to the highly specialized workplaces in the Slovak Republic where there is comprehensive care for patients with thermal injuries, pressure ulcers, chronic defects of various origins, non-healing wounds.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used at the workplace since 2003 with the use of a 13-seat pressure chamber. Its essence is breathing oxygen at a pressure of 1.6 – 2 bar, the indication list includes not only conditions of poisoning, caisson disease of divers, burns, but also other medical disciplines.
As part of plastic surgery, the clinic performs ear repairs, aesthetic eyelid and facial surgery, breast plastic surgery, including breast conservation surgery after removal of tumors by musculocutaneous and free lobes, abdominal wall treatment by dermolipectomy, liposuction, correction of scars and sequelae after surgery. Laser-assisted liposuction was the first in our workplace in eastern Slovakia in 2013.
The Department includes a skin bank that deals with skin replacements – xenografts, skin allografts, keratinocyte cultures, amnioma membranes in the treatment of burns and skin cover defects of various etiologies. He is currently launching a program of possible cultivation of chondrocytes, which can be used in orthopedic workplaces.
The Department provides supra-regional health care to patients with burns for the Košice, Prešov, Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions, and other areas of our country if necessary or free choice.
