Bilateral collaboration between UPJS and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands

The Department of Social and Behavioural Medicine is internationally active in collaboration on PhD projects since 1994, when the long-term collaboration between UPJS and University of Groningen started. In 1995 the first PhD student (I. Nagyova) was accepted for the EURIDISS project – European Research on Incapacitating Diseases and Social Support. Two years later in 1997 another PhD student (A. Geckova) was accepted for a project on inequalities of health among Slovak adolescents. The collaboration between the two universities was later on formalized as KISH – Kosice Institute for Society and Health; and in 2006 the institute was awarded a title of university centre of excellence for the period of four years. In 2010 KISH became a Graduate School of the Faculty of Medicine (read more). Over the years, research within KISH has been carried out in two research programmes “Youth and Health”, coordinated by A. Madarasova Geckova and “Chronic diseases”, coordinated by I. Rajnicova Nagyova. Since 2015 the coordination of the later research programme was undertaken by J. Rosenberger. The research programme on “Chronic diseases”, which was hosted by our department, has been a great success; 16 PhD students defended their thesis at the University of Groningen so far, and the team was granted over 1.2 mil EUR from national and international research research agencies. Also, within this research programme the first Double PhD Degree students (G. Kolvek, M. Skorvanek) defended their PhD theses.
