Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at P. J. Šafárik University (UPJŠ) and Children’s Faculty Hospital (CHFH) in Košice is a teaching base of Medical Faculty of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine. It provides teaching of pediatrics for medical students of general and dental medicine in both slovak and english language. It also provides teaching of this subject within the non-medical study fields of physiotherapy, nursing and public health. The department is a training workplace for specialized education in the study program of Pediatrics, Pediatric Rheumatology and Nursing in Pediatrics and ensures the implementation of a resident program in pediatrics, which has been accredited at the UPJŠ Medical Faculty since 2014. Organization of national and international professional events is an integrated part of the continual medical education of health professionals.

Position of the department in the network of surounding medical facilities justifies a wide range of differential diagnostic processes performed. The department currently has 104 beds. It addresses the issues of general hospital pediatrics and at the same time acts as a specialized tertiary hospital. With its inpatient fund and wide range of specialists and equipment, it provides comprehensive diagnostic and medical care for children and adolescents from birth up to 19 years of age from the entire region of eastern Slovakia. It currently has six departments, including an intermediate care unit – reserved for the care of children with severe clinical conditions. „Central Admission Unit“ (2 outpatient clinics and 2 expectation beds) and professional outpatient clinics in individual pediatric subspecializations also belong to the organizational part of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

The Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine has been actively involved in the solution of grant projects for many years and has achieved scientific research results priorities mainly in the field of nephrology, pneumology and rheumatology. Recently, the department has been actively dealing with the topic of childhood obesity, attributes of metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis and dyslipidemias, diabetology, vaccinology and the impact of probiotics and prebiotics on the child’s organism. The issues of social and preventive pediatrics have been addressed at the same time.
