Constitutionally, Obstetrics and Gynecology in Košice began to write their history exactly in 1905, when the building of the ‘Babská škola štátnej pôrodnice a nemocnice pre ženské choroby‘ on then Rákoczi and later renamed Moyzesova street was finished and placed in service. It was the most modern institution of its kind in the region of the former Austria-Hungary and later Czechoslovakia. It was staffed by many important obstetricians and gynecologists, educators, scientists, and neonatologists.
The most important period in the history of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Košice and in the catchment area of this institution was definitely the one that followed the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in Košice, which brought the transformation of the State maternity hospital and Women’s disease hospital into the University Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic. The generation of doctors surrounding such an important personality as Professor Theodor Schwarz, the first head of this clinic, was one of the leading groups of obstetricians and gynecologists, university teachers and researchers in the former Czechoslovakia.
The original Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine in Košice was divided in 1973 into two University Clinics, and later on several non-clinical OB/GYN workstations were established in Košice.
The staff of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, in terms of medical and preventive care focuses on the following:
- Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor defects using minimally invasive techniques (LSK) as well as synthetic materials.
- Use of minimally invasive surgical techniques in the treatment of benign diseases of the female genital tract.
- Possibilities of preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction prediction using biochemical and ultrasound markers.
- Early diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases of the female genital tract.
- Immunology of female sterility, focusing on issues of recurrent miscarriages, antiphospholipid syndrome and antisperm antibodies.
The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic is one of the largest workstations of the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice. It has a total of 70 beds and 8 beds for outpatient care. The clinic is situated on the 16th and 17th floor of the monoblock hospital building on the street Trieda SNP č. 1 and it consists of six sections – four inpatient departments, one delivery room and three operating rooms.
