2nd Department of Surgery of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine and the L. Pasteur University Hospital in Košice was established on the basis of the original surgical department of the hospital on Rastislavova Street and it’s currently located in a surgical monoblock. It has totaly 65 beds and provides permanent comprehensive surgical care for patients in general, thoracic surgery, endocrine, colorectal and gastroenteral surgery.
2nd Department of Surgery significantly participates in teaching of the medical students, as well as in the postgraduate teaching of doctors and participates in the education of secondary medical staff, education in the field of nursing and other non-medical disciplines. It also collaborated in the publication of teaching texts in the field of surgery – Surgery I, II for the study of nursing / 2007 /.
Wiiithin the doctoral study, it is possible to complete external and internal form of this study at the clinic. Within the scientific research area, the employees of the clinic are involved in the solution of scientific programs taking place at the clinic and also they cooperate with other clinics in the solution of grant programs.
Mini-invasive surgical techniques (laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic surgery in the area of the esophagocardial junction, laparoscopic surgery of the appendix, laparoscopic surgery of the inguinal hernia, laparoscopic surgery of the colon and rectum) are fully used in the treatment procedures. TEM (transanal endoscopic microsurgery) is used in patients with diseases of the rectum. In thoracic surgery, videothoracoscopic methods are used in the treatment of diseases of the pleura, lungs, mediastinum and esophagus. Videomediastinoscopy is also treatment and diagnostic procedure. Since April 2007, we have been using autofluorescence videothoracoscopy to diagnose and treat pleural diseases.
And at 2nd Department of Surgery resection and reconstruction operations are performed on the trachea and large bronchi (due to stenosis, injury, tumor involvement). The range of thoracosurgical procedures also includes volume reduction of the lungs in patients with diffuse pulmonary emphysema. In the care of a patient with oncological disease IInd surgical clinic provides diagnostic surgical procedures, radical resection procedures, surgical treatment of metastases (lungs, liver), palliative surgical procedures. These procedures are performed in close cooperation with the East Slovak Oncology Institute in Košice.
The research activity of the clinic focuses on the issues of solving complications in esophageal surgery and on the use of thoracoscopic methods in surgery.
Part of 2nd Department of Surgery is an intensive care unit and endoscopic department that offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures (esophagoscopy, gastroscopy, rectoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic polypectomy).
After the abolition of the workplace: The Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, MUDr. Martina Vidová Uğurbaş, PhD.,MPH became an employee of 2nd Department of Surgery, she performs work at the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Rastislavova 43, Košice.
