Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice recently received institutional accreditation from the Slovak Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (SAAHE), which received recognition from the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). This significant success underlines SAAHE’s determination to maintain and support the highest standards of medical education in Slovakia, as well as the quality of medical education at LF UPJŠ.
About WFME and the Recognition Programme
The World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) is a globally recognized organization committed to improving the quality of medical education worldwide. Founded in 1972, WFME works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and various international health organizations to promote high standards of medical education and training.
The WFME recognition programme is designed to evaluate accreditation agencies according to internationally recognized criteria. WFME recognition means that the accrediting agency’s processes and standards are at par with global best practices. This is particularly important as it ensures that medical schools accredited by recognized agencies meet the quality criteria necessary for their graduates to be eligible for international opportunities.
Among the 49 assessors of WFME is MUDr. Tomáš Petras, alumnus of our faculty, who works at the Medical Education Centre of the Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ as a researcher.
Impact on Slovak medical education
Thanks to SAAHE WFME recognition, Slovak medical faculties accredited by SAAHE – including the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine – are confident that their programs meet the highest international standards. This recognition facilitates the global mobility of graduates and allows them to pursue further education, research and employment opportunities around the world.
