The ceremonial session of the Academic Board of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, where prof. Maciej Banach, M.D., PhD was awarded the honorary degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa“ of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice to on the proposal of the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ took place in the Historical auditorium, Rectorate of UPJŠ, Šrobárova 2 street, Košice on Monday, January 27, 2020.
The UPJŠ Academic Board proposed to award the honorary degree of “Doctor Honoris Causa” to Dr.h.c. prof. dr. Maciej Banach, M.D., PhD., a worldwide recognized professor of Medical University of Lodz in Lodz, Poland, a leading European and world expert in Preventive Cardiology, as a prominent scientific personality from abroad, whose results are internationally acknowledged and who contributed to mutual cooperation in the scientific and professional education of UPJŠ employees on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the UPJŠ Faculty of Medicine and the 60th anniversary of the founding of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice.
Who is Maciej Banach?
Maciej Banach was born in 1977 in Plock.
He attained his education at the second oldest Lyceum in Poland and at the Medical University of Łódž ((MUL), where he was awarded the degree in General Medicine in 2002. After completing his studies, he began specializing in Cardiology at the Clinic of Cardiology of the same University. In 2006, he successfully defended his PhD. dissertation thesis became an assistant professor in 2008 and soon after, in May 2014, he was awarded the degree of full professor.
Professor Maciej Banach is a President of Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital – Research Institute, Head of Cardiovascular Research Centre at University of Zielona Gora, full Professor of Cardiology at the Medical University of Lodz and PMMHRI, Head of Foreign Affairs Office, Head of Department of Hypertension at the Medical University of Lodz and Professor in the Department of Nephrology, Hypertension and Family Medicine, Chair of Nephrology and Hypertension, at the WAM University Hospital in Lodz. Prof. Maciej Banach was an Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland in the past.
Professor Banach is a member of the Executive Committee of European Atherosclerosis Society, working as an Advisor in Matters related to European Union Relations and the member of International Atherosclerosis Society Regional Federation Executive Committee Member for Europe. He is a Founder and Head of the Polish Lipid Association – the official partner of National Lipid Association and Lodz Chapter of Polish Society of Hypertension. He is the founder of the Lipid and Blood PressureMeta-analysis Collaboration– a group of over 150 worldwide experts aimed to investigate the most important issues in the field of lipid disorders, hypertension, nutrition, and cardiovascular risk. He is a member of 2 largest worldwide databases – the Global Burden of Disease (University of Washington, Seattle, US) and Non-Communicable Diseases Risk Factor Collaboration (Imperial College of London, UK). He is also Founder and President of the foundation – Think-Tank“Innovation for Health”, which gathers six main health research institutes and over 40 medical business representatives in Poland with the main aim to make innovations in the medical area in Poland. He is a Visiting Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Victor Babes in Timisoara, Romania.
Prof. Banach has published over 800 original articles, reviews, editorials and book chapters in the field of hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiology, cardiac surgery, and risk stratification.
Prof. Banach is also within the top 10 worldwide experts according to ExpertScape in the field of lipids, statin therapy, cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol.
He is also a member of F1000, reviewer of over 80 international journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, European Heart Journal, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, Circulation, Circulation Research, British Medical Journal and Journal of American College of Cardiology. He is/ was a fellow of the many working groups within the European Union and the Republic of Poland and a laureate of several prizes and awards.
As the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ prof Daniel Pella, M.D., PhD. commented, Maciej Banach achieved Professor degree 12 years after graduation, which he considers incredible.
“But I do not mean the speed with which he has earned the degree of Professor thanks to his diligence and purposefulness, paraphrasing a well-known Polish film ‘Profesor Wilczur’ I know anyone in the field of Preventive Cardiology, who has done so much within such a relatively short period of time. I do not know a man of his age who would be admired and recognized by even much older colleagues,“ stated prof. Daniel Pella, M.D., PhD. during the ceremonial session of the Academic Board. According to prof. Pella, professor Banach is one of the world-leading leaders in the development and testing of new drugs, especially in the treatment of fat metabolism disorders.
“The Slovak Association of Atherosclerosis joined the ILEP scientific organization thanks to the initiative of prof. Banach, who, as its leader, has a huge impact on the introduction of modern diagnostic and treatment methods into practice, including Slovakia. Today, intensive cooperation with Prof. Banach is underway on the wide interdisciplinary KSC MR Study project, implementation is pending of several internships not just in his workplace, but also in the workplaces of closely cooperating companies associated in the ILEP Association,“ pointed out the Dean of the FM UPJŠ.
