The Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ in Košice lent to the University Hospital of L. Pasteur Košice the necessary equipment to work in the laboratory in the diagnosis of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causing the disease COVID-19. These are two laminar boxes from the Faculty of Medicine originally purchased for scientific purposes, one provided from the Associated Tissue Bank and the other from the Institute of Medical and Clinical Microbiology. Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ had also helped the university hospital by providing two highly qualified staff for sample expertise.

“Two of our staff assist are helping in investigating samples of patients suspected of being infected with coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, drawing on their many years of experience in PCR and Real Time PCR technologies,” said Dr.h.c. prof. MUDr. Leonard Siegfried, CSc.
For the purposes of diagnostics of the new coronavirus, a joint team of university hospital and medical faculty staff had been established. The diagnostic process started on March 12 and the laboratory is able to investigate 150 samples per day, while sensitive screening methods allow diagnostics of coronavirus infection early in the infection process.
Similarly, the Faculty of Medicine of the UPJŠ is also helping the Regional Institute of Public Health in Košice, to whom it lent its equipment and staff to investigate samples for the presence of a new coronavirus Institute of Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ.
If necessary, the Faculty of Medicine of UPJŠ may also assist in the examination of samples by providing additional staff. According to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UPJŠ in Košice prof. MUDr. Daniel Pella, PhD. the faculty is willing to assist in this emergency situation with the health sector and patients with suspected coronavirus with all its options.
