Project APVV-23-0500 In-depth Insights to Teachers’ Well-Being: A Mixed Methods Exploration of Teachers’ Well-Being, Including the Parent-teacher Relationship (WellTes)
Interviews with elementary school teachers
One of the aims of the project is to understand the relationship between the teacher and the parent of the pupil. We are interested in how teachers feel in contact with parents, what situations they encounter, to what extent different situations in contact with parents are related to their well-being. Specifically, we focus on parental over-involvement in school, which is perceived as a factor threatening teacher well-being. We accomplish this goal through qualitative research. In November, we will begin data collection through interviews with elementary school teachers. The initial recruitment of teachers signals an interest in the topic and we hope that the results will soon be useful not only in the research field but also in teaching practice.

The aim of the proposed project is to understand and promote the well-being of teachers in a national and international context using a mixed methods design (quantitative, qualitative and experimental). Well-being is defined as a specific concept in the context of quality of life, predominantly characterized by positive experiences, optimal functioning in interpersonal relationships. More broadly it can be understood in relation to self as finding or experiencing meaning in life and to fulfilling one´s goals.
Within work package WP1, the existing international cooperation will be extended by exploring the factors that contribute to the well-being of teachers and prospective teachers with an emphasis on stress and coping.
WP2 will focus on the well-being of teachers with an emphasis on their relationships with pupils´ parents, communication between teachers and parents and parental over-involvement at school.
Within WP3, an intervention program will be developed with its effectiveness evaluated using a between subject experimental design. The intervention will focus on improving teacher-parent relationships, teacher self-efficacy in communication with parents as well as coping with problem parents and over-involved parents.
A novel statistical approach (network analysis) will be applied to gain a deeper understanding of the complex structure of well-being among teachers and its interconnection with other factors. In order to achieve these goals, previous experience with large international data sets will be drawn on as well as previous evaluations of prevention programme effectiveness and several ongoing international co-operations. The results of the project will be presented in the form of scientific studies and presentations at national and international conferences. The obtained knowledge will be used in practice by offering the intervention program to teachers in practice, study materials for teachers and through educating prospective teachers.
Work package 1- WB of teachers and prospective teachers
- Aim 1- quantitative: To examine the state of teachers’ psychological well-being and job satisfaction. To analyse the results of the research on the well-being of Slovak teachers from the perspective of socio-cultural aspects of the post-pandemic period in collaboration with ISPA (International School Psychology Association). To apply a network approach to gain a deeper understanding of the complex structure of teachers´ well-being.
- Aim 2 – qualitative: To examine (i) teachers´ WB and prospective teachers´ WB; a psychologically healthy teachers’ and prospective teachers’ environment (e.g., home, school, community, society), (ii) the factors influence teachers’ and prospective teachers’ psychological well-being and mental health, (iii) the roles of schools, families, communities, and societies in promoting the road to recovery.
- Aim 3 – quantitative: (i) To explore the associations between perceived stress and prospective teachers´ well-being, (ii) to examine the mediating effect of depression, loneliness and personal resources on the association between perceived stress and prospective teachers´ well-being.
Work package 2 – Teachers´ well-being in the context of teacher-parent relationship
- Aim 4 – quantitative: To examine the factors of teachers´ well-being in the context of the teacher-parent relationship, teacher self-efficacy and parental overinvolvement in school activities of their child. To apply network approach to deeper understand the complex structure of teacher-parent relationships.
- Aim 5 – quantitative: To examine the factors of parental overinvolvement in adolescent schoolwork with the emphasis on cultural and societal factors.
- Aim 6 – qualitative: To examine what type of parental behaviour do teachers of adolescents perceive as overinvolvement. To analyse whether parents’ overinvolvement in school may be perceived as a risk factor for teachers’ well-being. To analyse what are teachers´ ideas about possible solution to deal with problems with parents.
Work package 3 – Intervention program
- Aim 7: To develop the intervention program aimed at improving teachers´ well-being by focusing on their relationship with parents.
- Aim 8: To explore effectiveness of the program using between group experimental design.
