Department of Classical Philology
The origins of the Department of Classical Philology at the Faculty of Arts UPJŠ go back to 1992, when the Department of Romance and Classical Philology was established at the Faculty of Philosophy of UPJŠ, which at that time was located in Prešov. After the division of the university in 1997, the Prešov faculties of UPJŠ became part of the newly established Prešov University, and department ensured the Latin language study program at FF PU until 2009. After the Faculty of Philosophy UPJŠ in Košice was re-established in 2007, the conditions were also created for the re-establishment of the Department of Classical Philology (until 2017 under the name Department of Romance and Classical Philology). After the successful accreditation, the 1st year of bachelor’s studies was opened in 2010/2011. The Department of Classical Philology provides the study program Latin language and literature, which is realized in the form of an interdisciplinary bachelor’s degree (under the name of classical languages) and a subsequent master’s degree (under the name of teaching Latin language and literature). The department premises are located in the Aristoteles building.
