I would evaluate my Erasmus only positively. Certainly, there were more stressful situations but, in the end, the experience was irreplaceable and definitely worth it.
The University of Oulu, where the way of teaching was different from what I am used to in Slovakia, was a pleasant surprise. Naturally, I was worried about whether I would be able to handle the courses and all the necessary things in English, but in the end it was not a problem at all. English was the second language for 99% of people, so everyone respected each other and we were on the same boat.
Apart from the school itself, which was one of the key reasons for my mobility, I encountered things that I hadn’t counted on during Erasmus, as I don’t personally know anyone who has participated in something like this. For example, the fact that a big part of the placement is travelling, around the area but also to other countries. It’s not a problem to travel during the semester either, everything can be arranged. But it’s better to have some money saved up, because it would be a shame not to take full advantage of these opportunities.
Furthermore, I think it is a huge benefit to be in a group of people from different countries. At Erasmus, friendships are formed very quickly and it helped me to see things from different perspectives and to try a lot of national dishes.
As for Finland, it’s definitely an environment for someone who doesn’t mind the cold. Oulu is a smaller, not very busy city, but it still offers a lot of student events and nightlife. Surrounded by forests at every turn, a big advantage was the feeling of safety, even during the dark winter months. In winter, it is very easy to do winter sports such as skiing or skating. In addition, bicycles are used all year round and cycle paths are everywhere.
I would definitely recommend a trip to anyone who has the opportunity. Courses can be completed after you return but the experience is unforgettable. Whether it be the Northern Lights or a day when the sun doesn’t set, but also the everyday little things and friendships that last after the stay is over.
