Free Movers, welcome!

Foreign students who want to add an international dimension to their degrees can apply to undertake a short-term stay for studies (a semester or an academic year), research or traineeship at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) also as free movers – i.e. independently, without being part of a specific scholarship/exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus+, National Scholarship Programme, International Visegrad Fund, CEEPUS etc.)

Free movers do not get any scholarship/grant from the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice does not require any tuition fees from free movers.

Free movers must be officially enrolled in a degree program at their home university during the application procedure and during the whole period of their free mover stay at our university.

Free movers at the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice are centrally administered by the International Relations Office (rectorate level), but the admission procedure takes place at a relevant faculty, institute or department. Please note that the admission requirements for free movers are set independently by each faculty, institute or department and the admittance to study programmes, research stays and traineeships is limited (depending on the capacities, possibilities and a decision of a relevant faculty, institute or department).

We prefer students from member countries of the European Higher Education Area.

Free movers can choose the same subjects as Erasmus students.

  1. Select the faculty, institute or department where you want to study, to do a research or to carry out a traineeship.
  2. Contact the International Relations Office (IRO) contact person. Please always mention your name, name of your home university, your study cycle and year of studies, study programme at your home university, faculty/department/institute of our university to which you would like to come and semester(s) in which you would like to come.
Faculty of Medicine

30 March for the 1st semester, the 2nd semester or the whole academic year:

  • an English (or Slovak) language certificate – at least B1 level. We accept an official language certificate or a confirmation from your home faculty. Students whose mother tongue is Slovak or Czech do not need to submit a language certificate.
  • an official transcript of records from your home university signed and stamped by your home university
  • an official confirmation of registration signed and stamped by your home university for the academic year in which you are submitting the application

After 30 March, the Faculty of Medicine will make a selection and will inform the candidates about the results.

The successful candidates will be required to send additional documents
by 15 June for the 1st semester or the whole academic year
by 30 November for the 2nd semester:

  • a fully completed Application form
  • a fully completed Learning Agreement
  • a photocopy of your passport/ID card
  • an official confirmation of registration signed and stamped by your home university for the academic year/period in which you will be implementing your free mover stay at our university*
  •  If you can not get a confirmation of registration at your home university for the academic year/period in which you will be implementing your free mover stay at our university at the time you are submitting the application, please inform us about the date when you will submit it / the procedure at your home university.

Please note that you must be an enrolled student at your home university during the whole period of your free mover stay at our university.

Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public administration, Institute of Physical Education and Sport

1 June: for the 1st semester or the whole academic year
1 December: for the 2nd semester:

– a fully completed Application form
– a fully completed Learning Agreement
– an English (or Slovak) language certificate – at least B1 or B2 level depending on the requirements of a relevant faculty, institute or department. We accept an official certificate or a confirmation from your home faculty. Students whose mother tongue is Slovak or Czech do not need to submit a language certificate.
– an official transcript of records signed and stamped by your home university
– an official confirmation of registration signed and stamped by your home university for the academic year in which you are submitting the application
– an official confirmation of registration signed and stamped by your home university for the academic year/period in which you will be implementing your free mover stay at our university***
– a photocopy of your passport/ID card**
– other documents if required by the relevant faculty, institute or department

** A photocopy of the passport/ID is needed only from the successful candidates, so you can send it later, but as soon as possible after you are accepted.
*** If you can not get a confirmation of registration at your home university for the academic year/period in which you will be implementing your free mover stay at our university at the time you are submitting the application, please inform us about the date when you will submit it / the procedure at your home university.

Please note that you must be an enrolled student at your home university during the whole period of your free mover stay at our university.

All documents have to be in English, Czech or Slovak. Incomplete applications will not be processed!

Students from third countries who need an invitation letter for a visa/residence permit to enter and stay in Slovakia need to send us the necessary documents well in advance.

Please check very carefully the administrative procedures and duties towards Slovak authorities related to entry and stay in Slovakia (visa, reporting the stay after arrival, temporary residence of third county nationals/residence of EU/EEA Swiss nationals etc.) – please see a guide to administrative duties below and contact the relevant consulate/embassy if needed.

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice offers assistance to welcome students and staff with disabilities. However, the International Relations Office must be informed about it during the application procedure since the options we offer them and their acceptance are conditioned by state and university regulations and possibilities.
