Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) recently hosted a high-profile delegation from the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) accompanied by representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Chinese Embassy in Slovakia. The visit, held from the 12 to 15 December 2024, was a key event in advancing bilateral collaboration in education, research, and academic development.
The CUMT, founded in 1909 and headquartered in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a prestigious public university. Known for its focus on interdisciplinary education and research, particularly in mining, engineering, and natural sciences, the CUMT is a part of China’s Project
211 and Double First-Class Construction initiatives aimed at fostering excellence in higher education. With over 37,000 students and a commitment to innovation reflected in its motto – “Innovation and Rigorous Pursuit,” CUMT is a leader in global academic collaboration.
The CUMT delegation led by Prof. Dr. Hongwei Zhao, the President of CUMT, and Prof. Dr. Wu Yan, the Vice Minister of Education of China, engaged in a series of academic discussions and the ceremonial event of a signing of the memorandum of understanding. The Chinese Ambassador to Slovakia, H. E. Cai Ge, also participated, underlining the significance of the bilateral collaboration.
The delegation from the CUMT also included Vice-President Prof. Dr.
Zhengfu Bian; Prof. Dr. Nanshan Zheng, Dean of the School of Environment and Spatial Informatics; Prof. Dr. Jiu Huang; Prof. Dr. Qiuzhao Zhang; Ms. Chen Liang, Deputy Director of the International Office, and Mr.
Yang Xu, Regional Manager of the International Office. The visit was coordinated by the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Dr. h. c.
Prof. Dr. Slávka Tomaščíková and the Vice-Dean for External Relations of the Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michal Gallay and the UPJŠ was in discussions represented also by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Roman Soták, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Vladimír Zeleňák, Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Adriana Zeleňáková, Institute of Physics, Faculty of Science, and the Director of Technology and Innovation Park at UPJŠ, Dr. Andrej Mirossay.
