The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) prepared the 14th year of the University Without Borders day camp for children, which took place from 8 to 12 July 2024 at five faculties and three departments of the university. During one week, 56 children in four groups, for whom the programme was provided by 44 staff and students of UPJŠ in Košice, experienced studying at the university. The day camp is designed for students of the 5th and 6th grade of primary schools.
During one week they visited the Faculties of Medicine, Science, Law, and Arts, the Botanical Garden, the University Library and the Institute of Physical Education and Sport. The Faculty of Public Administration welcomed the children in the splendid premises of the Historical Town Hall of Košice. The UPJŠ management believes that all children have the same right to quality studies regardless of their living situation, family background or financial possibilities, which is why children from various non-profit organizations or centres for children and families in need participate in each year of the University without Borders camp. This year, we welcomed four children from the Oasis – Hope for a New Life facility in Bernátovce. The goal of the University without Borders camp is to playfully arouse interest and encourage enthusiasm for science and education in children, to develop their talents, abilities and skills at a young age so that through gradual study they can become great professionals in various fields of medicine, natural sciences and humanities in the future. At the same time, day camp participants have the opportunity to use the summer vacation period in a meaningful way. The programme is prepared for them by teachers, professional staff and PhD students of the University with an emphasis on the use of the acquired theoretical knowledge during the activity itself.
