The habilitation and inauguration procedure is a process in which Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice (UPJŠ) decides on the award of the scientific and pedagogical titles of associate professor and professor to candidates who meet the requirements set out in the Higher Education Act as well as the criteria for obtaining the scientific and pedagogical titles of associate professor and professor at UPJŠ, which are in accordance with the standards for the habilitation procedure and the procedure for the appointment of professors of the Slovak Accreditation Agency for Higher Education. Any candidate who meets the following requirements and criteria may apply for the habilitation or inauguration procedure.
The development, assurance and monitoring of the quality in given fields of habilitation and inauguration are guaranteed by habilitation and inauguration quality assurance boards, composed of a group of at least five persons who are scientifically or artistically active in the field of habilitation and inauguration or in a related field.
The rules and procedures of the habilitation and inauguration procedure adopted by UPJŠ guarantee the transparency and openness of the procedure under equal conditions for all applicants, as well as objective, professionally informed, consistent and unambiguous verification of the fulfilment of the established requirements and criteria by the applicant, which guarantee the criteria for the selection of members of the habilitation and inauguration committees and opponents in habilitation and inauguration procedures at UPJŠ.
General criteria for filling the post of associate professor or the post of assistant professor in a defined field of education and a defined field of science at individual units of the University are developed, as well as specific conditions for filling the posts of professors in individual fields of study.
There is a Commission for the Assessment of Scientific Qualifications of the Staff of UPJŠ in Košice, which discusses proposals for the award of scientific qualification levels II or I to researchers who meet the requirements set out in the Act on the Slovak Academy of Sciences and expresses its opinion on them before the Rector of UPJŠ submits them to the Commission for the Assessment of Scientific Qualifications of the Staff of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
The Scientific Council of UPJŠ decides on the award of the scientific degree of Doctor of Science (DrSc.) to candidates who meet the requirements set by the Decree of the Slovak Commission for Scientific Degrees in those scientific fields in which the chairmen of the commissions are UPJŠ employees.
