On Friday, 18 October 2024, the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice opened its gates for the 14th time to those interested in studying at UPJŠ. Almost 750 students and teachers from secondary schools, mainly from the Košice and Prešov regions, visited the Open Day at UPJŠ event.
The visitors were treated to a rich programme, which started with an official welcome by the Vice-Rector for Interdisciplinary Education and Innovation, Renáta Orosová, who said:
“UPJŠ in Košice has a 65-year history of which we are very proud. Our priority is to provide quality education that reflects the needs of today’s world, to conduct research, to create a stimulating environment for young people who are ready to shape the future. Today you have a unique opportunity to get to know a university that is home to 7,700 students, more than 1,900 of whom come from nearly 70 different countries. More than 800 university teachers are involved in their educational process. Let today be the start of your successful academic adventure. May you decide to become part of our university family.”
Teachers, students and PhD students of the University used their own experience to introduce the study opportunities offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration, Faculty of Arts and the Institute of Physical Education and Sport. The programme was well complemented by the university counselling centre, the department of international relations and internationalisation and the university library. Student associations and university media also presented their activities: the Slovak Dental Students’ Association, the Košice Medical Students’ Association, Student Radio Košice (ŠtuRKo), the Univerzál magazine, the UniTV university television, the student councils of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science, Elsa Košice and the Erasmus Student Network Košice. The Chorus Universitatis Šafarikianae university choir also organised recruitment for new members during the Open Day at UPJŠ event.
This edition of the event was exceptional in that the visitors were greeted by Pavol Jozef Šafárik in person, an important personality of Slovak history, whose name is borne by our university. “It was a great idea. Seeing ‘Šafárik’ live was an experience. The costume looked very real. Everyone wanted to take a picture with him,” said a visitor to the Open Day at UPJŠ.
Our thanks goes to the organisers of the event, the programme makers and all the participating high school students. We hope to see you in September 2025/2026! 😉
