Central European Arbor Day is celebrated in the Central European countries on 20 October. On this occasion, various organisations as well as individuals commemorate the importance of trees by holding various activities, such as planting new trees. The management of the Botanical Garden of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice (UPJŠ) decided to celebrate the Central European Arbor Day this year by establishing an Alley of Prominent Personalities right on the garden’s premises.
The invitation of the university and the botanical garden management to the planting ceremony of the first tree in the alley was accepted by Rudolf Schuster who started with this act a new tradition of planting trees by prominent personalities from Slovakia or other countries in the University Botanical Garden. “The university management considers this event to be an important contribution of the UPJŠ Botanical Garden to the cultural diplomacy within the city of Košice, the region and Slovakia,” said the Vice-Rector for International Relations prof. Slávka Tomaščíková.
