It is with great sadness that UPJŠ has received the news of the former Rector of Technical University of Košice (TUKE), Professor Stanislav Kmeť, passing away on 6 December 2023 at the age of 66. Professor Kmeť served as Rector of the Technical University of Košice in the years 2015 – 2023.

Professor Kmeť successfully completed his undergraduate education at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical College in Košice majoring in structural analysis of structures within the civil engineering study programme. After graduation, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Load-Bearing Structures and then as an assistant professor and deputy head of the Department of Metal and Wood Structures of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Technical College in Košice. In 1992 he was awarded the degree of associate professor in the field of theory and construction of civil engineering structures. In 2000 he was awarded the professor degree in the same field. In 2020 he was awarded the DrSc. degree in the scientific field of civil engineering constructions and transport structures.
Before taking up the position of the Rector of TUKE in 2015, he served in several leading positions as the Vice-Dean for International Relations and Scientific Education of the TUKE Faculty of Civil Engineering, Dean of the TUKE Faculty of Civil Engineering and later as the TUKE Vice-Rector for Development.
In Professor Kmeť, the Slovak academic environment lost not only an outstanding expert, scientist and teacher in the field of construction, but also a person of wisdom and optimism full of welcoming attitude and willingness to support good ideas and logical solutions. His ideas, plans for the development of education and research will always resonate with us.
The farewell ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 12 December 2023, at 11 a.m. in the Ceremonial Hall of the Crematorium in Košice.
